China-US rivalry intensified, leading to development such as the creation of the trilateral security arrangement between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS) involving nuclear technology. Multilateralism was also contested with the rise of protectionism, trade wars, and a lack of global leadership due to preoccupation with domestic affairs.
